Problems with second hand car sales people

I was in the market for a new car and looked at buying a second hand car ideally from a dealer. I wanted to use a dealer so i got a bit of protection and i would have thought it would be better to go via a dealer and not a private seller. I need some consumer advice first though because i am so scared of getting ripped off or buying a complete lemon off someone. I have been stung before so i am even more careful now about what im buying and who from. I have been looking at a few cars and they look great but they could hold all kinds of hidden problems and want to know that im going to be covered. I was wondering if the same sort of rules apply to cars that do to anything else you buy, the sales of goods act i think its called. I would like it so i can buy the car but then if anything is wrong that im not aware of at time of sale i would like to be able to bring it back and get my money back.
